“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17:20-21 (ESV)

ON His Mind John 17

On His Mind

When I was growing up, my Sunday School teacher used to put my name in John 3:16 when she quoted it:

For God so loved [Amanda] that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

I was remembering that when I read John 17. I also thought of the old song, When He Was on the Cross, I Was on His Mind.

I’m sure all of that is true, but what I haven’t always thought of is the fact that I was on Jesus’ mind while he was living life on this earth.

John 17:20-21
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17:20-21 (ESV)

Jesus Prays for Us

Right here in John 17, Jesus says that he is asking for those who will believe in Him through the words the disciples speak and write.

That’s us!

We read the words of the disciples and believe on the Lord Jesus.

Isn’t it cool to think of Jesus thinking of us? While He was interacting with the people right in front of Him, He was thinking far into the future. We were on His mind.

Eternal Perspective

Sometimes I need a little more of that foresight. That eternal perspective.

While I am raising my kids, I need to remember that my goal is not just obedient kids today. It is to raise adults who love God, live responsibly, and care for others.

When I am going about my day, I need to remember that the focus of my life is not getting things done and feeling comfortable. It is about bringing glory to God and leading others to Him.

Action Step:

How can I think eternally?

Especially when I feel myself getting frustrated, angry, or upset. Can I step back and take the long view like Jesus? Very soon His disciples would betray Him and run away, but He could see past that hurt to future generations who desperately needed their words.

Prayer:

Father God, Wow! I am amazed that Jesus was thinking of me so very long ago. Thank you for the bible that leads us to you. Help us to have an eternal perspective and draw others to You as well. In Jesus’ name, amen.
