Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord,
and he will repay him for his deed. Proverbs 19:17

Lent Day 34 - Proverbs 19:17

Savers vs. Spenders

I am the baby of the family. By quite a lot. My brother and sister are twelve and ten years older than I am.

When I was a kid, I was always the saver and my siblings were the spenders. I would always have money and they would need to borrow.

I loved the idea of my brother and sister owing me money (sometimes with interest – I don’t think I was as nice then as I am now.)

Lends to the Lord

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord,
and he will repay him for his deed. Proverbs 19:17

How much more beneficial to us is it to have God owe us than our own brothers and sisters? When we are generous to those in need, the Bible says that it is like lending to God.

God never defaults on a loan

God is faithful to repay. He is more generous than we could ever be. We can’t out-give God.

We don’t have to worry that we will lack for the things we need when we trust God to care for us because we are generous to the poor.

Generosity reaps rewards

God rewards (or repays) those who are generous to His children who are in need. He uses our hands and feet, our finances, to help the poor and needy. We are His instruments.

We don’t need to charge the poor interest or chase them down for repayment. God Himself says to us, “Charge the debt to me. I’m good for it.”

Action Step:

Our focus today is GIVING TO OTHERS!

Giving to Others: Offering our money, time, or talents to help those in need. Finding some way to enrich the lives of others and think of other people rather than yourself.

If there is someone in need, but you have been hesitant to give to them, remember today that in giving to that person, you are actually lending to God.

He will repay you for your generosity. Being repaid by God is definitely something I would sign up for!

Prayer:

Dear God, Open our eyes to those in need around us. Help us to have generous hearts and open hands. We ask that You would reward our generosity with Your amazing blessings. In Jesus’ name, amen.
