The Word (John 1:1-3) - A December 16 DEvotional

December 16 – The Word

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. John 1: 1-3

The Word (December 16)

I love words. Words are my thing. I enjoy reading them, writing them, and even learning about the etymologies of interesting words.

However, though they are interesting, words are not just interesting intellectual exercises. They have power and have value. Power to do good and to do evil.

Wise words are more valuable
than much gold and many rubies. Proverbs 20:15

And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. James 3:6

Not just our words…

Think about creation. As Genesis 1 introduces each element of creation, it is recorded “Then God said,” The one true God spoke everything into existence with His words.

God’s words have creative power. In John 1, Jesus is called THE WORD.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. John 1: 1-3

The Word

Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. Everything that was created was created through Him. We were not worthy of such honor and mercy, but He lowered Himself to come and live among us.

The Word - "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." John 1:1-3

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Humanity got to observe the glory of God in an up close and personal way. Like we learned yesterday, He was full of wisdom and grace. He spoke only the truth and there was no sin in Him.

What we do with our words

So, how do we honor that gift? Do the words of our mouths glorify Jesus or do they disrespect it? Are we creating life with our words or tearing others down?

December 16 Devotional Action Step:

May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Today is the day to “Watch your mouth”! However, let’s not just refrain from negative words. Let’s choose to use our words to glorify God and build others up! Words can be our superpower for good!

This Christmas season, let’s bring The Word back into our words!

Prayer:

Dear God, be present in my words today. Help me to use my words to honor THE WORD today and all throughout the Christmas season. In Jesus’ name, amen.
