Week 4:  Wisdom 4: Proverbs 8:11 – Ruby

“For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” Proverbs 8:11

Better than Jewels

I have to be really honest. I am not a big jewelry girl. My husband gets very frustrated with the fact that I would much rather have art supplies or practical gifts than sparkly baubles to wear. However, I can appreciate the value and beauty in gemstones, like the large ruby in our Bible art journaling printable.

for wisdom is better than rubies - Wisdom in the Word Week 4

What is wisdom like?

Throughout the beginning of Proverbs 8, wisdom is personified. She calls out to the people in the town. She tells us something about herself.

“Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.

My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness.

All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse.

To the discerning all of them are right; they are upright to those who have found knowledge.” Proverbs 8:6-8

Say What?!

Almost every descriptor of wisdom that she gives leading up to our focus verse is about the mouth. The things she says are very important.

“I have trustworthy things to say” “I open my lips to speak what is right” “My mouth speaks what is true”

“My lips detest wickedness” “All the words of my mouth are just”

Wisdom is displayed in what we say (or don’t)

When we choose to focus on gaining wisdom and understanding, one of the first things we have to work on is controlling the tongue. Letting our mouths run wild often makes it where we can’t hear when God is imparting wisdom to us through His word, His people, or His Holy Spirit. If we restrict our mouths to speak like wisdom speaks (trustworthy, right, true, just, etc.), we open ourselves up to gaining prudence, understanding, and wisdom.

Wisdom speaks what is : trustworthy, right, true, just What about your words?

Wisdom in the Word Week 4 ACTION STEP:

The Bible says that nothing we desire can compare with this Wisdom. I can desire a lot! I frequently want all the art supplies that I can’t really afford (among other things). However, getting this wisdom is worth so much more than all the things I want put together. If the first step to that wisdom is to reign in my tongue and think before I speak, isn’t that a small price to pay? Today, let’s make a point to wait before speaking. Think, “is the thing I want to say trustworthy, right, true, just?” Or is it JUST what I want to say? Wait to hear the wisdom of God.

Wisdom in the Word Week 4 PRAYER:

Dear God, Help us to reign in our tongues and to think before we speak. Remind us to wait before we speak and listen for Your wisdom. Lead us daily to more and more wisdom in our speech and in our lives.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
