Happy Thanksgiving Day

In the United States this week, we have a holiday called Thanksgiving Day. It’s a day set aside for remembering our blessings and being thankful. It is a pretty awesome way to kick off the holiday season leading up to Christmas. However, many of us have turned it into a day of stressful cooking, eating, and attempting to endure time with extended family members.

Change Our Thinking

What can we do to transform that way of thinking about this day? I think our scripture for this week gives us a clue.

“But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:24

Three Main Ideas

There are three main ideas here:

  1. Fear the Lord
  2. Serve Him faithfully with all your heart
  3. Consider what great things he has done for you

Consider the Great Things

Consider the great things God has done for you – that’s the path to a true day of thanksgiving. When we start with an attitude of respect, awe, and fear of the Lord, and then are faithful in serving God with all our hearts, then we add in taking the time to ponder what God has already done for us. This is a recipe for a grateful heart and attitude.

Great things? The breath in our lungs. The world around us. Friendship. Salvation from sin. Healing. Deliverance. Love. The list goes on and on.

What's on your list of Great Things?

ACTION STEP:

What are the great things that God has done for you? Let’s not just thank God for those big things. Instead, let’s go for even those small things that make our days so much better: a night’s sleep, a great parking space, tasty food, a compliment from a stranger, a deal that saves you money, etc.

Let’s try everyday this week (not just on Thursday) to consider the great and small things that God has done for us! Get into the habit of gratefulness even when bad stuff happens.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

PRAYER:

Dear God, Bring to our minds the great and small things that You have done for us. Help us to consider these things and develop a heart of gratitude everyday in every circumstance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
