Wisdom in the Word – Week 1: Proverbs 1:7 – Stack of Books Printable

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 3:5-6

The Beginning

I have loved reading for as long as I can remember. Just looking at stacks of books, shelves of books, or the spine of a book makes my heart happy. I can get lost in the worlds, characters, and plot twists of a good novel so easily.  A great nonfiction book can enthrall me too – learning about things I never knew before.

Career Student

In fact, as we toured colleges with my son last year, my husband and I both came to the conclusion that we would gladly be career students and stay in college forever if we could afford it. We love the environment and classroom setting.

The Beginning of Knowledge

However, our verse today says that the beginning of knowledge and wisdom is not books or schooling. Instead, we begin to get wisdom and understanding…we start to gain knowledge…with the fear of the Lord.

What is the goal?

You see, the goal isn’t for me to be the wisest or most knowledgeable one in the room. The goal is for me to become more Christlike. Godly wisdom leads to action. It leads to becoming. If I simply gain earthly wisdom, I am tempted to get puffed up thinking about how much I know and my levels of wisdom. However, if I have a healthy fear of the Lord and respect for His all-knowing wisdom, I stay humble while learning of Him and His wisdom.

Godly wisdom leads to action. Quote from Wisdom in the Word Week 1 devotional

Wisdom in the Word Week 1 – ACTION STEP:

Let’s do a deep dive into our hearts and inspect our motives for gaining wisdom. Is it because we want to be considered wise by other people or because we want to become more like Jesus? Do we really believe that God is wiser than we are or are we still trying to rely on our own knowledge and earthly wisdom? Let’s turn our hearts toward the wisdom of our all-knowing God with respect for His unbounded knowledge.

Dear God, we want to be wise in Your wisdom that leads to action. Align our hearts to Your will and help us to fear You and not despise godly wisdom and discipline. In Jesus’ name, amen.
