Now the word of the Lord had come to Jeremiah when he was confined in the guard’s courtyard: “Go tell Ebed-melech the Cushite, ‘This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words for disaster and not for good against this city. They will take place before your eyes on that day. But I will rescue you on that day—this is the Lord’s declaration—and you will not be handed over to the men you dread. Indeed, I will certainly deliver you so that you do not fall by the sword. Because you have trusted in me, you will retain your life like the spoils of war. This is the Lord’s declaration.’” Jeremiah 39:15-18
Faith-Filled Day 1: The Promise to the Eunich – Jeremiah 39:15-18
Jerusalem was falling.
The city was surrounded, fear filled the streets, and destruction seemed inevitable. In the middle of this national tragedy lived a man named Ebed-Melech, an Ethiopian official serving in the king’s court. He wasn’t a prophet, priest, or king. Yet when Jeremiah was thrown into a muddy cistern and left to die, Ebed-Melech courageously stepped forward. He risked his own safety to rescue God’s servant.
God Saw
As Babylon’s army closed in, Ebed-Melech likely wondered if his act of obedience would cost him his life. But God saw what no one else noticed.
Before Jerusalem fell completely, the Lord sent Jeremiah with a personal message just for Ebed-Melech:
“I will deliver you… you shall not fall by the sword… because you have put your trust in Me.”
— Jeremiah 39:17–18
God Knows
What a remarkable reminder that God knows each of His children by name. While the city crumbled, the king was captured, and thousands were carried away, God fulfilled His promise. Ebed-Melech was protected and led safely through the chaos.
Life often feels like Jerusalem in those final days. Circumstances may be falling apart around us. We may wonder if anyone notices our quiet acts of faithfulness or if trusting God really makes a difference.

Does anyone notice?
The story of Ebed-Melech answers with a resounding yes.
God never overlooks faith that is placed in Him. He sees every act of compassion, every courageous decision, and every moment we choose trust over fear. His protection may not always remove us from difficult circumstances, but His promises will carry us safely through them according to His perfect will.
When everything around us seems uncertain, we can cling to the same truth that sustained Ebed-Melech: God is faithful to those who trust Him.
Reflection Questions
- Where is God asking you to trust Him despite uncertain circumstances?
- How can you show courage and compassion like Ebed-Melech this week?
- Which of God’s promises do you need to hold onto today?
Action Step
Identify one area of your life where fear or uncertainty has been influencing your decisions. Write down one promise from Scripture that speaks to that situation (such as Jeremiah 39:17–18, Isaiah 41:10, or Proverbs 3:5–6). Pray over that promise each day this week, then take one practical step that demonstrates your trust in God—whether it’s offering help to someone in need, having a difficult but loving conversation, making a faith-filled decision you’ve been delaying, or choosing peace instead of worry. Like Ebed-Melech, let your trust in God be seen through your actions.
