In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Set your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord. He said, “Please, Lord, remember how I have walked before you faithfully and wholeheartedly, and have done what pleases you.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah: “Go and tell Hezekiah, ‘This is what the Lord God of your ancestor David says: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I am going to add fifteen years to your life. And I will rescue you and this city from the grasp of the king of Assyria; I will defend this city. This is the sign to you from the Lord that he will do what he has promised: I am going to make the sun’s shadow that goes down on the stairway of Ahaz go back by ten steps.’” So the sun’s shadow went back the ten steps it had descended. Isaiah 38:1-8
Faith-Filled Day 4: The Shadow Went Backwards – Isaiah 38:1-8
King Hezekiah became gravely ill, and the prophet Isaiah told him to put his affairs in order because he was going to die. In deep sorrow, Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall and poured out his heart to God, reminding Him of his faithful walk. Before Isaiah had even left the palace, God heard Hezekiah’s prayer and sent the prophet back with an incredible message: Hezekiah would recover and live 15 more years.
The Word
To assure Hezekiah that His promise would come true, God offered a miraculous sign. The shadow on the stairway (or sundial) of Ahaz would move backward ten steps instead of continuing forward.
“Behold, I will cause the shadow on the steps… to go back ten steps.” — Isaiah 38:8
Only the Creator of time and the universe could reverse the movement of a shadow. What seemed impossible became undeniable proof that God’s Word could be trusted.

The Fulfillment
Just as God promised, the shadow moved backward, and Hezekiah recovered from his illness. He lived exactly fifteen more years, demonstrating that every promise God makes is faithful and true. The God who rules over time is never limited by circumstances, and nothing is beyond His power.
Reflection Questions
- What does this miracle teach me about God’s authority over time, nature, and every circumstance?
- Have I ever experienced God answering a prayer in an unexpected way?
- Is there an “impossible” situation in my life that I need to place into God’s hands today?
- How does God’s faithfulness to Hezekiah encourage me to trust His promises for my own life?
Action Step
Write down one situation that feels impossible or beyond your control. Spend time praying over it every day this week, asking God to strengthen your faith. Instead of focusing on what you cannot change, focus on the God who rules over all things—including time itself.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Thank You for reminding me that nothing is impossible for You. Just as You heard Hezekiah’s prayer and gave him a miraculous sign, You hear my prayers today. Help me trust Your timing, even when I cannot see how You are working. Strengthen my faith to believe that Your promises never fail and that You are able to do far more than I could ever imagine. Teach me to rest in Your perfect plan and to remember that You are Lord over every moment of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
