Faith-Filled Day 9: The “Secret” Reinforcements - 2 Kings 6:15-17

When the servant of the man of God got up early and went out, he discovered an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”

16 Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.”

17 Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:15-17

Faith-Filled Day 9: The “Secret” Reinforcements – 2 Kings 6:15-17

The king of Aram was at war with Israel, but every plan he made seemed to fail because God revealed the enemy’s movements to the prophet Elisha. Frustrated, the king sent a great army with horses and chariots to surround the city of Dothan where Elisha was staying.

Early the next morning, Elisha’s servant stepped outside and saw the city completely surrounded by enemy soldiers. Overcome with fear, he cried out, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” From his perspective, defeat seemed certain.

The Word

Elisha remained calm because he saw a reality that his servant could not yet see.

“Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” — 2 Kings 6:16

Then Elisha prayed:

“Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” — 2 Kings 6:17

Elisha knew that God’s protection was already present, even though it was invisible to human eyes.

The Fulfillment

God answered Elisha’s prayer immediately. The servant’s spiritual eyes were opened, and he looked beyond the enemy army. He saw the mountains covered with horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha—God’s heavenly army standing ready to defend His servant.

The enemy may have surrounded the city, but God’s presence surrounded the enemy.

This miraculous revelation transformed the servant’s fear into confidence. The danger was real, but God’s power was greater. His unseen protection had been there all along.

Reflection Questions

  1. What circumstances in my life make me feel surrounded by fear or uncertainty?
  2. Am I focusing more on what I can see or on what God has promised?
  3. When has God shown His faithfulness in ways I didn’t recognize until later?
  4. How can remembering God’s unseen presence give me courage to face today’s challenges?

Action Step

Take a few quiet moments today to pray Elisha’s prayer: “Lord, open my eyes.” Ask God to help you see His presence, His promises, and His work in your life instead of focusing only on your circumstances. Choose one Bible promise to meditate on this week whenever fear begins to rise.

Prayer:

Dear God, Thank You that I am never alone, even when life feels overwhelming. So often I focus on the challenges around me instead of the power that surrounds me through Your presence. Open my eyes to see You at work in ways I cannot always perceive. Replace my fear with faith and my anxiety with confidence in Your promises. Help me remember that You are always greater than any problem I face and that Your heavenly resources are never exhausted. Thank You for watching over me and fighting battles that I cannot see. May I trust You more each day and walk in the peace that comes from knowing You are with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
