The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.
22 “As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease.” Genesis 8:21-22
Something Beautiful #4: Seedtime and Harvest – Genesis 8:21-22
Here in the midwest United States, the leaves are changing colors as summer turns to autumn. Pumpkins are ripening and the yellows, oranges, and reds of both flowers and leaves are all around us. Harvest is here and it is the result of a beautiful promise.
The beautiful promise
The worldwide flood had just occurred and Noah and his family are brought to safety in the ark. God makes a promise that he will never again destroy all living creatures. There will be seasons. There will be day and night.
“As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease.” Genesis 8:21-22
Seedtime and Harvest
In the actions of seedtime and harvest, there is a demonstration of God’s beautiful promise. Not only will He not destroy all living creatures but also that what we plant will grow and bear fruit, like the pumpkin in our printable.
From the small beginning of a seed, a large vine can grow that will bear lots of large pumpkins. If you have ever carved a pumpkin, you know that each pumpkin is full of hundreds of seeds. From each of those seeds, a vine can grow that will produce lots of pumpkins. The small beginning can lead to a chain of enormous fruit-producing capability.

What we plant matters
There is something beautiful in the promise of seedtime and harvest repeating each year. What we plant matters. It matters because it will produce fruit.
Choose to plant things that draw others to the kingdom of God. Choose to plant beautiful promises that will come true. Choose to plant the Word of God in your heart and mind and it will bring forth beauty in the form of fruit in your life.
Action Step:
Think of some “fruit” that you would like your life to produce. What is the small beginning (or seed) of that fruit? How can you plant that in your life today? Make a plan to start planting those seeds and watering them daily, giving them the attention they need to grow and bear fruit. Let the pumpkin remind you that what you plant matters.

Prayer:
Dear God, Open our eyes to see the ways we can grow new fruit in our lives from small beginnings. Help us to plant a seed today and grow it in our lives to bear fruit for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
